You really got a hold on me . . .

Bridget, Spike and I take a long walk this morning.

It looks like we are set for a sunny day all day long.

The crew and I drive into Ajo to dump our trash and fill our five one-gallon water jugs.  There’s a trash bin conveniently located next to the 25-cents-a-gallon water dispenser.  This is so easy.

Next I drive us over to the True Value hardware store and ask the lady behind the counter if they have any water containers.

“Nope.  We’re all out.  I’ve got some coming in tomorrow. Five gallon for $16.99 and they’ve got spouts on ‘em.”  The price makes me wince, but I smile at her and I head for the door.

Back at the campsite, I fix a new batch of hummingbird nectar.

The sugar water has been going fast  due to a pair of flickers who like to hang on to the feeder causing it to tip sideways so they can insert their long beaks in the little plastic yellow flowers.   These birds are about twelve times larger than a hummingbird, at least, so they can suck up a lot of nectar in a day.   The hummingbirds still visit.  They aren’t about to be intimidated by a pair of greedy flickers.

The crew and I visit with Rick at his campsite.

Rick’s Scamp

I tell Rick I’m thinking of moving on to Yuma, but I can’t seem to get myself going.  “ It’s so nice here.”

He laughs.  “It’s the desert.  The desert  affects you that way, so you can’t make a decision.  People come up here, the first few days they’re doing their little routine.  Then the desert gets to them and they slow down. “

He pauses and then chuckles.  “I start to do something and, first thing ya’ know, I’m saying, oh well, I’ll do that tomorrow.  It took me three weeks to get my brakes looked at.”

“You’re right!  I’ve been meaning to go get water for three days.  It wasn’t ‘til this morning that I actually made it to town with the jugs.”

We have a nice visit sitting on his camp stools next to his fire ring.  During this time Spike marks territory around the campsite and Bridget chews through her leash, ruining it.   Rick’s dog, Lady, picks up a piece of wood, carries it around, and then decides to chew on it for a bit.  Rick’s had Lady since a pup.  Now she’s about seven years old.

Later, Rick and Lady stop briefly at our campsite on their usual, late afternoon walk.

Bridget and Spike are in their pen.  Spike is especially happy to see Lady again.  After they leave, I take the crew inside where they crash on the bed for a nap while I read my book and check emails.

Rick says we’ve got several sunny days coming up, right through Christmas.  The Tuesday after Christmas it’s supposed to get up around 68-70 degrees.

That’ll be nice.

Yep, the desert has a hold on me.
