May 2012

The crew and I visit tourist attractions on the cheap.

The first week of May our camp is Williard Springs (NFS, free), Arizona.  The second week we move from south of Flagstaff to the north side with people we met at Williard.  We enjoy the higher elevation among the pines and a view of the desert to the north from our camp at Sunset Crater (NFS, free).  Across the road is the actual crater and lots of lava.

Northward bound, we stop at Lee’s Ferry Campground (NFS, $6) for three days where Spike soaks in the cold water of the Colorado River.  Then we’re eastward bound across northern Arizona to the Kaibab National Forest, boondocking at Crazy Jug Point (free) and Possum Village (free, a camp name originating from Spike’s near-miss).

Not content with our North Rim experience at Crazy Jug, we visit the Rim again and spend the night at DeMotte Campground ($8.50), only seven miles north of the Grand Canyon.

Moving northward, we visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, and camp overnight at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park ($16) where the showers are delightful.  The next day we travel westward to Zion National Park, superlatives not necessary here.  On the other side of Zion, friends Chuck and Geri show us a pleasant place to boondock along the North Fork of the Virgin River (free).  By Memorial Day, we are still there enjoying our friends, both human and canine ones, and waiting for the holiday weekend to be over so the tire with the slow leak can be repaired.

Notable this month is the economy with which we were able to visit popular tourist sites.

Also, the Perfect Tow Vehicle received some attention.  Most notable of all is I got a haircut.
