June 2012

Ouch!  We bust the budget!

June starts slowly with the crew and me at our Zion riverside camp (free) in Virgin, southwestern Utah.  On the eleventh we go north on Interstate 15 to Beaver, and go up, up, up to Upper Kent Lake (NFS, free) where we have a lovely reservoir all to ourselves.  After three nights we move northeastward.  A long day driving across Utah places us at Green River State Park ($20) where I enjoy a hot shower and we turn on the A/C.

Now we’re on a mission to obtain a driver’s license in South Dakota.

The next two nights we camp at the city park of Duchesne (free), Utah.  Heading into Colorado, we climb another mountain to a reservoir and stay at Freeman Campground (NFS, $6) for three nights.  We cover a lot of ground on the interstate the next few days with an overnight at the Rawlins, Wyoming Flying-J (free) and an overnight in the Laramie Wal-Mart parking lot (free).

Our next stop is Wheatland, north of Cheyenne.

What a great town!  The city invites RVers to park at the Wheatland City Park ($3 donation) and hook up to water and electric. We stay the limit of three days. A short hop puts us at the Platte River outside of Lingle (Wildlife Management area, free), Wyoming, for one night.

We enter South Dakota on the 26th.

Cottonwood Campground (COE, $3.50) is near Hot Springs. It’s a convenient jumping off point to visit Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary.  We enjoy lots of relaxation here after an exciting month of travel through never-seen-before (by us) territory, experiencing a variety of types of camps and visiting some national landmarks.

Most notable this month is our outgo exceeds our income.

Almost all categories are higher in June, especially gas, equipment, and repair of the Perfect Tow Vehicle.

But, good golly, what a month!
